Description

ITALIAN HALLMARKS
SILVERSMITH’S HALLMARK
800, lozenge with star and maker number 329 FI (Belfiore Giuseppi), Firenze. The hallmark consists on a “star”, a number (identifying the silversmith)

and a two letters alphabetic code (identifying the province)  FI Firenze

In some countries, the testing of precious metal objects and marking of purity is controlled by a national assay office. Depending on the national legislation the use of hallmarks may be compulsory, voluntary or provided by a manufacturer’s declaration.
The Italian hallmarking system is organized on a compulsory basis. Italian silversmiths rarely submitted their pieces to the optional official hallmarking. Usually silver pieces were marked only with the ‘800’ (purity degree 800/1000), sometimes coupled with the silversmith’s hallmark. The ‘800’ was an unofficial mark and there was no uniformity in its shape.
Hallmark(s):  “Belfiore”, “329 FI”
Information:  Founded in 1948 by Guiseppe Belfiore, in Florence, Italy.  Has since opened multiple locations throughout Italy, as well as in the United States.  Works primarily in silver and gold.
